In October 2024, Ayming surveyed 723 CEOs, CFOs, and Heads of ESG and Sustainability across eight countries to uncover how businesses are embedding ESG into their strategies, overcoming challenges, and preparing for the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). The results highlight significant trends, regional differences, and key obstacles facing companies in their sustainability journey.
Key findings:
- Positive Business Impact: 75% of surveyed companies reported that their ESG strategies had a tangible positive impact on business performance. Customer satisfaction (43%) and brand reputation (40%) were the most cited benefits.
- Funding Gaps: A lack of ESG funding is a significant hurdle, with 22% of businesses identifying it as a “severe” limitation that hinders compliance and progress.
- CSRD Compliance: While 60% of businesses have achieved compliance with CSRD, another 31% are racing to meet the standards within the next 12 months. This framework is not only transforming large corporations but also impacting smaller suppliers within the value chain.
Mid-sized companies (250–500 employees) are leading the way, with 58% on track to meet reporting requirements ahead of schedule. However, businesses across Europe are calling for clearer net-zero policies and regulatory roadmaps, with 76% rating this need as “very important.”
Embedding ESG in Business Strategy
The adoption of formal ESG strategies is becoming more widespread, with 72% of businesses implementing structured plans.
Spain and Italy lead in adoption rates, while Portuguese companies lag behind, highlighting regional disparities.
Investment in ESG is also increasing, with 24% of businesses allocating at least 5% of their revenue to sustainability efforts.
Despite these investments, the complexity of regulations and fragmented data remain significant barriers for over 20% of businesses.
The Role of CSRD in Shaping the Future
The CSRD is emerging as a defining framework for European businesses. Its influence extends beyond compliance, impacting companies’ supply chains and driving smaller suppliers to adapt. Businesses are also highlighting the need for better government support to simplify compliance efforts.
